1. Escolas Gerais

Some of the most famous pictures of Tram 28 in Lisbon are taken at the Escolas Gerais street. This narrow street lies in the heart of Alfama and it’s a fantastic location to create your Lisbon postcard.

What makes it so special? The narrow bend with the colorful pastel houses and the view of the church of São Vicente de Fora perfectly captures Alfama’s vibes. A wide-angle lens is perfect for shooting this iconic street and capturing the tram. 

Following the tram railway, you can also take another spectacular photo at the crossroads between Escolas Gerais and Calçada de São Vicente. As the street has space for only one vehicle, a little bit of patience will get you that perfect Tram 28 photo.

2. Largo Portas do Sol

Largo Portas do Sol is one of the most beautiful places in Alfama and one of the best Tram 28 photo spots in Lisbon. This picturesque square is one of the most visited places in Lisbon as you can find two famous Miradouros just around the corner.

If you want to take a perfect photo in Porta do Sol, I recommend you stay in the bend between Largo Portas do Sol and Largo de Santa Luzia. Once you are there you just wait for the tram to arrive to take a photo with the Sao Vicente statue and church in the background. 

The square itself can also be used as a picturesque setting for snapping an iconic photo of the Tram 28. However, this is an incredibly busy location, so early morning is the best time, especially if you are visiting during the peak season.

3. Sè de Lisboa

Sè de Lisboa, situated in the heart of Alfama, stands as a symbol of Lisbon’s rich history and has to be added to your Lisbon itinerary. The trams passing right in front of this magnificent cathedral create the perfect scene for an iconic Lisbon postcard.

As the city’s oldest and most significant church, Sè de Lisboa dates back to 1147. Despite the devastating earthquake and damages over the centuries, it stands strong.

To capture the perfect photo of the cathedral with Tram 28, you must wake up early and catch the first trams of the day. Later in the day, the spot becomes crowded and busy, making it difficult to get a clear shot.

4. Rua da Conceição and Calçada de São Francisco

Rua da Conceição and Calçada de São Francisco are located in the Baixa district of Lisbon and they are two ideal streets to take pictures of Tram 28 in Lisbon. 

Rua da Conceição starts from the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene and stretches until the Calçada de São Francisco. Here you can appreciate some of the finest architecture of Baixa.

I recommend playing with your zoom lens and finding different perspectives to give your photo with Tram 28 a special touch. While an empty street with the yellow tram is always charming, I think the urban life and traffic can add something special to your photo.

5. Largo do Chiado

Largo do Chiado is where most of the pictures of Tram 28 in Lisbon are taken. Chiado is one of the most beautiful and famous neighborhoods of Lisbon, where you can find churches and beautiful palaces, high-end boutiques, and cafes.

Some of the main attractions in Chiado are Luís de Camões Square, cafe A Brasileira, the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation, and the iconic Rua Garret.

If you want to snap a perfect picture of tram 28 in Largo do Chiado it is recommended that you come early in the morning, as the square is one of the liveliest places in Lisbon. While a wide-angle lens will do the magic, you can play with a zoom one to get a creative shot.

6. Calçada do Combro Santa Caterina

If you are looking for less popular places, one of the best spots to photograph Tram 28 is in Calçada do Combro. This street lies between Santos and Chiado and is one of the best-hidden spots in Lisbon.

The street is famous for the Church of Saint Catherine and for offering the iconic view over the Bica funicular. While this street is located in a busy area, with a bit of patience you can take a good photo almost any time of the day.

My favorite photo spot to capture Tram 28 is at the road fork of Black Wells Street and Poiais de São Bento. As a backdrop, you can choose either the Church of Saint Catherine or the little square where the tram stops.

7. Estrela (Basílica)

The stop of the Basilica da Estrela is one of the best Tram 28 photo spots in Lisbon. It is located right in front of the Basilica, just a few stops before the last stop of Prazeres, in the district of Lapa.

The Basilica is one of the best examples of Baroque and neoclassical styles in Lisbon. Its dome is one of the most iconic in the city and is visible from several viewpoints in Lisbon. I have to say that its ornate facade is one of the nicest in the Portuguese capital.

Despite being a popular attraction in Lisbon, the area never gets as packed as other locations on this list. My recommendation is to take a picture behind the gate of the Jardín de la Estrella to snap an iconic Lisbon postcard.

8. Rua da Graça and Largo da Graça

If you are wondering where to take pictures of Tram 28 without crowds, head to Rua da Graça and Largo da Graça. Graça is one of the oldest and most characteristic neighborhoods in Lisbon, and unlike Alfama, it is often left behind.

Graça is home to some of the most popular viewpoints and some of the oldest “tascas” in Lisbon. This is the perfect place to enjoy some local cuisine at a reasonable price and watch a sunset at the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte or Graça viewpoint.

Considering that Graça is a residential area, you can take a photo in Largo or Rua da Graça at any time of the day and experiment with every type of lens. This is a great alternative if you don’t want to deal with crowds in Lisbon.

9. R. da Voz do Operário 

R. da Voz do Operário is an unusual but great spot to take Tram 28 photos. This uphill street leads you to the neighborhood of Graça and is adorned with some beautiful palaces.

The street is home to A Voz do Operário which is a Portuguese cultural and charitable association with a long history and importance. 

In Voz do Operário street you can take a beautiful photo of Tram 28 by using your best zoom lens. From a higher point of this street, you will be able to capture the tram with the Tagus River and Lisbon architecture in the background.

10. Calçada de São Vicente 

Calçada de São Vicente is a short and narrow street that leads you from Escolas Gerais to the Church and Monastery of  São Vicente de Fora.

Despite the limited space, this is one of the best places to take Tram 28 photos. The zigzag curve, the pastel and Azulejos houses, and the viewpoint from the little square in front of the church give you a unique chance to take a great photo of the tram.

Considering the multiple opportunities you have here, any lenses can be used to take some beautiful photos. I recommend a zoom lens to capture the curve and a wider one from the church square. 

Since the street is incredibly narrow, you don’t need to come here particularly early, but it could be a help to skip cars and capture a neat photo of the tram.
